Styles of Outdoor Party Lighting

Outdoor lighting is used for many reasons, including security, ambience, and safety. In recent times, outdoor lighting has also been used more and more as a way to decorate buildings and gardens during the night time hours. Specific outdoor lighting fixtures are also used during parties and concerts, where outdoor party lighting is used to enhance the music and help entertain the audience. However, even if you don't have access to the high tech laser lights and expensive coloured spotlights used during large concert events, there are plenty of other ways to improve your party with lights. Lighting can generally be classified in three different types; task lighting, accent lighting, and general lighting. All three of these types of lighting can be used outdoors, although a specific kind of accent lighting is most often used in a party situation.

Task lighting refers to a functional kind of lighting that is used when a concentrated light source is required, such as while reading, putting on make-up, or cooking a meal. While task lighting is not often used in a party situation, it may be needed during outdoor cooking activities, by security personnel, and in the bathroom. General lighting refers to any kind of lighting that is used for general illumination. General lighting is also known as ambient lighting, and consists of most of the lights in common use around a home or business setting. General lighting such as ceiling lights and floor lamps are regularly used during party events, although most of the focus of party specific lighting will be given to dedicated accent lighting fixtures. Accent lighting refers to any lighting that is decorative in nature, with lights that are designed especially for parties firmly in this category.

Accent lighting is also used in gardens to highlight landscapes and plants, as well as throughout interior space to highlight pictures and other design features. During party events, some of the types of lights used include laser lights, spotlights, and track lights, although flood lights and other security lights may also be used during large events. A party environment can always be created with the simple use of low ambient lighting and well placed accent lights, with more general and task lighting fixtures placed in appropriate places.
